I-95 Temple Avenue Improvements Colonial Heights, VA

Published by Hank Gottschalk

The I-95/Temple Avenue Interchange project was designed to improve traffic flow, to eliminate prolonged periods of delay, and to decrease the accident rate at its location in Colonial Heights, VA. The design-build team decided to realign the entrance and exit ramps at that location and replace the signalized intersection with a roundabout relocated west of the existing intersection that included two lanes for traffic and a continuous bypass lane on the westbound approach.

The roundabout design was chosen as the most efficient design for this congested intersection to provide improved safety and traffic flow. A roundabout is designed to reduce traffic and wait times by allowing traffic to continually move at a low rate of speed versus coming to a complete stop at signals, this being especially important during peak traffic hours.

Allan Myers, formerly American Infrastructure-Va. Inc. installed over 80 precast concrete structures and over 3700 LF of concrete pipe (ranging from 12” to 60” diameter) for the new interchange, all of which manufactured by Concrete Pipe & Precast, LLC.
