Barnwell Regional Airport - Pipe Replacement

Published by Hank Gottschalk

Barnwell Regional Airport is a General Aviation Airport owned and operated by Barnwell County, SC. The Airport was originally constructed in 1942 by the US Army Air Corps and used as a training base for B-25 bombers during World War II.

A section of HDPE (flexible plastic) drainage pipe between two of the airport’s hangers failed and although the surface area over the pipeline had been previously repaired, full replacement of the pipeline became necessary.

Griffin Contracting Inc. replaced the failed plastic pipe and added some additional drainage using 36” & 42” diameter reinforced concrete pipe (RCP) supplied by the CP&P Charleston Facility. Griffin Contracting, a heavy construction commercial contracting business located in Pooler, GA specializes in site preparation, utility work, and roadway construction.

The design engineer for the pipe replacement project requested the use of rubber gaskets for sealing the joints on the 36” & 42” RCP. Replacing the failed plastic pipe with rubber gasket RCP should provide a vey long lasting solution for the airport and its aviators.
