ROUTE 58 WIDENING – LOVERS LEAP, PATRICK CO. VA

Published by Hank Gottschalk

In December 2003, The Virginia Department of Transportation signed a public-private partnership agreement with Branch Civil Inc. to develop and widen Route 58 from Hillsville to Stuart as funding became available. The 36-mile corridor begins southwest of Hillsville and continues east through Carroll, Floyd, and Patrick counties to approximately one mile west of Stuart. This section (Lovers Leap) is the fourth phase of Route 58 widening between Hillsville and Stuart starting 0.7 miles north of Stuart and extending 0.3 miles east of Route 610 in Patrick County. This $300 million design build project will widen 7.4 miles of Route 58 over Lovers Leap from two to four lanes and improve safety on the mountainous portion of the roadway.

Concrete Pipe & Precast was awarded this project by Branch Civil Inc. and will be providing over $1.5 million in pipe and precast products. Part of this project consists of over 2,000 lf of 60” special design RCP (height of cover ranging from 39’ – 58’) that will be produced by CP&P’s Hanover Pipe plant.

Functioning as a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Branch Group, Branch Civil serves clients in Virginia, West Virginia, and the Carolinas. They offer a range of services, including heavy civil construction, design-build, and site development.
