Odd Fellows Road Interchange and Extension, Lynchburg, VA

Published by Hank Gottschalk

Odd Fellows Road serves as an entrance for industrial traffic to the City of Lynchburg’s first industrial park as well as the many other commercial properties along its length. As part of the new interchange and roadway extension, G.A. & F.C. Wagman, Inc. installed multiple runs of Special Design Reinforced Concrete Pipe produced at CP&P’s Hanover pipe plant.
Presently, Odd Fellows Road begins at Business Route 29/501 (Lynchburg Expressway), proceeds across Mayflower Drive and ends approximately 0.7 miles east of Mayflower Drive. The proposed improvements to Odd Fellows Road are divided into three project segments, and include a new interchange and bridge, extension of Odd Fellow Road, and construction of a roundabout at Top Ridge Road and Mayflower Drive.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) limits depth of bury (or fill) over reinforced concrete pipe based upon the pipe’s strength class. VDOT limits normal class III RCP to be installed up to 14 foot of cover, while allowing class V RCP to go up to 29’ to 30’. Pipe installations deeper that this are required to be Special Design, based upon the required fill over the pipe. Wagman installed 60” and 72” Diameter Special Design pipe for fills up to 50’ over the pipe.

Special Design RCP is available in multiple sizes and strength classes. CP&P has provided several special designs across the region, including Special Design RCP for 100’ of cover, which is over eight times stronger that standard class III RCP.
