VDOT’s I-64 / High Rise Bridge Project

Published by Hank Gottschalk

Construction on VDOT’s I-64 High Rise Bridge project began during the summer of 2018 and is expected to be completed by December 2022. This Design-Build project was awarded to the Granit-Parsons-Corman team with an approximate construction cost of $409.6 million.

VDOT determined a design-build contracting approach would expedite delivery of the I-64 High Rise Bridge Project. Under this method, the design-builder performs final design, right-of-way acquisition, utility relocation, permit acquisition and construction. This approach allows some of these activities to be done concurrently.

Completion of the project will improve and expand the capacity along nearly 9 miles of I-64 by improving mobility and safety while adding capacity to this key evacuation route. The focus on evacuation route safety and resiliency is part of a national response to the increasing threat of natural disasters such as wildfires, flooding, and other severe weather.

Many states and localities have begun requiring only concrete pipe and concrete products under evacuation routes, interstates, and other critical routes. The High Rise Bridge project utilized several hundred feet of concrete pipe and drainage structures provided by CP&P. Using these products will provide a long lasting, resilient infrastructure under this critical highway for years to come.
